Dance New Jersey, the statewide service organization for dance, welcomes all dancers and dance enthusiasts to the “Dance New Jersey Festival: Culture Shock.”

This year’s theme, “Culture Shock,” will highlight dance forms from around the world. The Festival is a full day of workshops and classes, open to the entire NJ dance community, and will also include the summer installment of “Show Up and Dance.”

Classes include:

  • Indian dance with Renuka Srinivasan of Tala Shruti School of Dance
  • Zumba with Freespace Dance’s Lisa Grimes
  • American Street with Carlos Cordova of Souljerz Crew
  • African with Karen Love of Umoja Dance Company
  • Belly Dancing with Diane Dragone of Kennedy Dancers
  • Irish dance with Timothy Kochka from The Davis Academy of Irish Dancing

The Festival is the perfect opportunity for dancers to try something new and explore the breadth of cultural dance available in the state. Administrators of dance organizations will be invited to join the 1:30 pm workshop with Baraka Sele entitled “What does success look like?”

At 3:00 PM, the Festival will continue with “Show Up and Dance.” a bi-annual showcase of dance from artists across the State. Members of Dance New Jersey are allotted ten minutes to show a new or current work from their repertory. The general public is invited to share the fun!

“Show Up and Dance” will also feature the presentation of the Dance Advocate Award and, for the first time, the Jeté Award. The Dance Advocate Award recognizes the recipients’ outstanding contributions to promoting the energy, excitement, and excellence of dance and dance education in New Jersey. This year’s recipient is Carolyn Dorfman, of Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, who is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of her company this year. Cristen Pennello of Union City High School will be receiving Dance New Jersey’s first ever Jeté award in recognition of her outstanding efforts to make a “leap” forward in dance education.
