By Lori Sackler

WHERE:
Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, 411 E. Clinton Street, Tenafly

The most taboo topic in American homes today is money. It seems as though we can discuss every sort of outrageous subject except for family finances. However, lack of communication about money can mean the difference between leaving heirs cared for and comfortable or embroiled in an endless sibling brawl that can destroy family relationships and finances. The problem is all too common: generational transfer of wealth fails 70 percent of the time, according to research by top experts at MIT and The Economist.

It doesn’t have to be that way, and Lori Sackler can tell us how when she comes to discuss her well-received, just released new book. Her presentation will include an informal question and answer session, as well as a book sale and signing.

51GnCC-U1vL._SL500_SS500_In THE M WORD The Money Talk Every Family Needs to Have About Wealth and Their Financial Future (McGraw-Hill) financial planning expert Lori Sackler draws from personal experience to show families how to communicate about money matters through all of life’s great transitions—changes in financial circumstances, remarriage and blended families, retirement, illnesses, preparing heirs and transitioning wealth. “The bottom line is that families that do not talk about money can ultimately lose their family and their money,” says Sackler.

During her presentation, Lori will advise her audience on the steps they need to take to create an infrastructure that will support good communication, including:

  • EASING THE TRANSITIONS: Just about every key life event is also a money event. Learn what conversations need to take place around relevant topics and issues.
  • PREPARING THE INNER LANDSCAPE: How to spot the roadblocks that can keep your family from communicating successfully.
  • HOW TO TALK THE TALK: Using professional techniques to make family conversations about painful topics more productive and successful.
  • PICKING THE PROS: THE M WORD helps families choose the right professionals to guide families through the increasingly complex financial world.
  • KEEPING THE LINES OPEN: Money talks cannot be one-time events. Ongoing strategies will sustain families through all of life’s most challenging circumstances.

The result is a family that can draw on one another for love and support. “Learning how to overcome the money taboo and having productive financial conversations with your loved ones about life transitions is not a panacea for family dysfunction. But it will go a long way to making your financial and emotional lives a great deal healthier and preserving family unity,” says Sackler.
