BONJ New Header

Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant and Mozart

WHEN: Wednesday afternoon, February 6, at 2:30 PM
WHERE
: NJIT, University Heights, Newark
ADMISSION: Free

The free concert will open with the spirited Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by George Frideric Handel, from the opera Solomon.   This will be followed by the orchestra's first performance of one of Mozart's most popular works - Symphony #25.  The symphony is filled with energy and drama inspired by the 18th century style known as Sturm und Drang.

The major work for the afternoon will be the premier semi-staged performance of the 40 minute opera Mark Twain and the General.   The opera composed by Dr. Robert W. Butts to a libretto by New Jersey playwright Jewel Seehaus-Fisher, is about Mark Twain's work with Ulysses S. Grant and Grant's final courageous battle - writing his literary book on the Civil War while suffering with cancer.   The production features soprano Karole Lewis as Julia Grant, bass John Lamb as Ulysses S, Grant and tenor Brian Jamieson as Mark Twain.  Also appearing will be tenor Ira Barth as the Cook and Anthony Shashaty, Douglas Anderson, Tom Loughman as the Soldiers.

Jon Plaut, writing in thealternativepress.com, said of the work, "this highly thoughtful and stimulating work arouses the deepest thoughts about the Civil War, war in general, and Ulysses Grant's place in history."
