FebARt2013XPrior to retiring, Norm Rosen enjoyed making little sketches in travel journals he took with him on vacations and trips. Since retiring, he has taken classes at the Old Church Art School in Closter; the Art Center of Northern New Jersey; and with Paulette Cochet, where he currently studies pastel and watercolor. He has exhibited at student shows at the art schools he attends and at juried Bergen Countywide Senior and Diversity art shows.

“Painting absorbs me in a way that most other activities do not,” says Norman. “I lose awareness of my surroundings and become focused on the lines, colors, composition and difficulties of the work. I often draw on my unconscious and enjoy creating both realistic and abstract works. I particularly love organic shapes such as flowers, birds, fish and trees, which permit me to combine realism and abstraction in the same painting.”

Norm has not completely abandoned the left side of his brain while pursing his art, as he still serves as a mediator for the NJ Superior Court and as a mediator and arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. He served as the attorney for the Englewood Board of Adjustment from 1973-2000 and a trustee of the Center for Food Action for many years, including a term as president from 1998-2002.

Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 9 AM – 10 PMm; Friday and Sunday, 9 AM – 4 PM; closed Saturday and Jewish holidays. Admission is free and open to the community. For more information contact Rochelle Lazarus, Waltuch Gallery Director, at 201.408.1409 or visit the JCC website at www.jccotp.org.
