FREE CLASSES OFFERED @ NJ SCHOOL OF DRAMATIC ARTS

NJSDA Acting Class Scene

OPEN HOUSE &
SAMPLE CLASS DAY

WHEN: Saturday, January 5, from 10 AM to 1 PM and on Sunday, January 6, from 12 PM to 2 PM

NJSDA studios located at 593 Bloomfield Ave in Bloomfield
There is a ten percent discount for anyone who is registering during the sample class week-end.


Sample classes being offered for Adults and Teens include

  • Intro to Acting
  • Intro to Improvisation
  • Voice 10
  • TV Commercials
  • a special workshop on Showbiz Tips
  • Kids (grades 1-3) can sample Ready, Set, Act! and Broadway Juniors
  • Older kids (grades 4-5) can sample Young Actors Workshop and Musical Theater Kids

Sample classes for Tweens (grades 6-8) include

  • Tweens Acting
  • Musical Theater
  • Improv Comedy
  • a special Parent’s Showbiz Tips Workshop

Director Beth Baur said, “The wonderful thing about the sample class day is that anyone interested in trying a class or finding out about acting or musical theater can do so in a safe environment with no obligation to register for classes. It is so much fun and absolutely stress free. Students often tell us that they loved the opportunity to meet the teachers and find out if NJSDA was going to be a good fit for them.”

New Jersey School of Dramatic Arts is celebrating its 9th year in Bloomfield. Many of its students have gone on to have careers in television, film and on stage. The school offers 6 levels of Acting, a multi-level Musical Theater program and one of the top Improv programs in the state. It is the home of 3 professional improv troupes and produces 4 shows a year with its Encore Musical Theater company for advanced musical theater students. In fact, their Encore Musical Theater troupe will be presenting "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" on Friday, January 11, and Saturday, January 12, at the Westminster Arts Center at Bloomfield College.  Both shows are at 8 PM.

All of the teachers at the studio have extensive experience as performers as well as years in the classroom. They are:

Beth Baur (Director) who has been a professional actor for over 25 years and has worked with such luminaries as Tommy Tune, George Burns and Lanford Wilson. She has performed in national tours, Off-Broadway, regional theatre and has done over 200 network commercials and corporate industrial films, as well as voice-overs and print. Beth has also been a theatre educator for over 20 years. She founded a Theatre for Young Audience's company called "The Make-Believables" and created the children's touring company "The Great Pretenders." In addition to this, she is an adjunct professor in acting for the film department at Montclair State University. Beth has also been a theater critic and instructor at the annual Morris County Teen Arts Festival. She directed the independent film, REEL WOMEN. Beth received her BFA at the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University and was selected to be included in that year's "Who's Who of American Colleges."

Robert Sapoff (Director) has been profiled on ABC News, CNN, NY 1 News and in the Star Ledger, Herald News, and Daily Record. A professional actor for over 25 years, his theatre credits include the role of Harpo in the Off-Broadway revival of "The Cocoanuts," which was named one of the 10 best Off-Broadway productions of the year. Bob has appeared on Nickelodeon and in countless television commercials (including a Clio Award winner) and print work nationwide. During his 10 years as Associate Director of Action Theater, he created and directed "On The Spot," a professional improvisational comedy troupe and is the founder and executive director of NJSDA's own professional improv troupe, "Nutty By Nature," which tours the NY/NJ metropolitan area. Bob has also been a theater critic and instructor at the annual Morris County Teen Arts Festival. In his 20+ years as a teacher, Bob has taught over 1,000 students. He is also an adjunct professor in acting for the film department at Montclair State University and recently was included in "Who's Who Worldwide Edition."

Gary Lynch, a two-time National Broadway Award nominee for his performance in Mamma Mia! He originated the role of Sam Carmichael for the North American Premiere of Mamma Mia! in Toronto, the U.S. Premiere in San Francisco and the 1st National Company. On Broadway, Gary performed the role of Inspector Javert in Les Miserables.  His Off Broadway credits include; Destry Rides Again (York Theatre), Goose (Musical Theatre Works) Lux In Tenebris (Lincoln Center), Let It Ride (Lambs Theatre), Lola (Lark Theatre Co). Numerous Regional credits include; The Thing About Men (Tom), 1776 (Adams), Olympus On My Mind (Jupiter), The Threepenny Opera (MacHeath), A Little Night Music (Carl Magnus), Rags (Saul), Guys and Dolls (Sky), Nine (Guido), 3 Guys Naked...(Ted), and (Orin and everyone else) in Little Shop of Horrors.  Gary was also in the National Tour of Dirty Dancing and recently appeared as Joe in the Westchester Broadway Theatre's production of Some Like It Hot.

Sam Kitchin, who has been teaching improv, acting and acting for the camera for three years now and just recently appeared in the 2011 NYC Fringe Festival.  His other credits include  Broadway: Frozen, Jerry Springer the Opera (a special event at Carnegie Hall).  Off-Broadway: Frozen (MCC), The Trip To Bountiful (Signature).  Regional: The Night of the Iguana (Berkshire Theatre Festival), Oscar and Felix (Seven Angels Theatre), Don’t Dress for Dinner and The Garden of Frau Hess (Caldwell Theatre), Brigadoon, Man of La Mancha and Evita (Actors Playhouse/Coral Gables), Happy Hour and The Rainmaker (12 Miles West), Evita (Arkansas Repertory), Lend Me a Tenor and Captains Courageous (Cumberland County Playhouse), Greater Tuna (Florida Playwrights Theater) and many others!  Film: Arbitrage (soon to be released), Splinterheads, The Messenger, Across The Universe, No Reservations, The Hoax, The Truman Show, Holy Man.  TV: The Onion Sports Dome, Law and Order SVUMildred Pierce, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, The Late Show, The Sopranos, 30 Rock, Whoopi, Third Watch, Law & Order,  One Life To Live, All My Children, Guiding Light and over 75 commercials. 

Corinna Sowers-Adler,
who has over ten years experience as a performer, director, vocal coach, and acting teacher in the professional theater world. From its inception, she has served as the Director of Theatre for the Wilkes University Conservatory. Her Conservatory Theatre program, which she created, currently has 180 students in 7 classes and culminates with full scale productions each semester. Corinna has also instructed theatrical collegiate students at Wilkes University. While Children's Theatre Director for the historic Pocono and Bucks County Playhouses, Corinna cast well over 2000 roles for children and teens and directed fifty productions on a summer stock schedule. Her extensive performance career has taken her from New York City, to Florida, to Nevada with several stops in between.

Ted Wrigley, an Equity actor who teaches improvisation and acting. He currently directs On the Spot and the teen improv troupe Sparks of Insanity, and performs with Nutty by Nature.  Ted is a graduate of the NJ School of Dramatic Arts acting program.

Toni DiBuono, who has appeared on Broadway in The Boys From Syracuse and Wonderful Town. Her Off Broadway credits include Forbidden Broadway (Drama Desk and Outer Critic Circle Awards), Bad Habits with Nathan Lane and Up Against It at the Public Theatre. On television, Toni starred as Pat Tuesday in the award winning PBS series Mathnet, co-hosted Lifetime's Our Home, guest starred on Law and Order, Law & Order SVU and has done numerous commercials.

Leo daSilva, who has worked with numerous theater companies from the Brooklyn Academy of Music to the Theater des Westins in Berlin, Germany. His vocal training has allowed him to perform as a soloist in classical works such as The Magic Flute to contemporary musical roles. As a performer Leo has appeared in over 100 productions including leading and supporting roles in The Hudson Shakespeare Company as well as the German-based Wolfgang-Boshck touring company. His acting credits also include Law & Order (SVU & CI) as well as Will & Grace. In addition to performing, Leo has committed himself to the development and education of live theatre and music as the Music/Musical Theatre Director at Harrison High School.  As a graduate of New Jersey City University, Leo holds a dual Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance and English/Theatre Arts with a minor in dance. 

Deborah Martin who spent 11 seasons as Musical Director at the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival (now the Shakespeare Theatre of NJ). She is the Founding Artistic Director of the 4th Wall Musical Theatre (Working, Pippin, Company, and Nine) and has served as Musical Director with the Fire Island Pines Arts Project (Little Mary Sunshine and Dames at Sea with Charles Busch). Off Broadway credits include Inside Out as Musical Director. Her work with the Montclair Operetta Company includes Evita, Pirates of Penzance, Kismet, and Cabaret. She is also a composer: The Princess, The Poet and the Little Grey Man (book by Joseph Robinette) was published by Dramatic Publishing Company.

BJ Solomon assistant directed Angels in America: Perestoika under Broadway Director Leah Gardiner for the Connecticut Repertory Theater. As a choreographer he choreographed the NJ premier of Cats at The Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ as well as productions of Mame, 1776, and The Full Monty. BJ studied acting at the University of Connecticut and Musical Theatre at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He has studied under such notable performers as Judy Blazer, Joe Deer, Jean Ballantine, Tina Landau and Theresa McWillaims. BJ has performed throughout the country in productions of Big River (Paper Mill), Annie, Cats, Fiddler, Miss Saigon, Dreamgirls, Merrily We Roll Along, and Show Boat.
