Would you like to lean how to paint on copper and incorporate its natural luminosity, reflective highlights, and warm tone into your work? This workshop teaches the advantages, the preparation, the palette, and the techniques involved in oil painting on copper! Learn why old masters have painted on copper and how using copper has helped preserve their works. (Image by Liron Sissman) | Fabulous Flowerpots | WHEN: Sunday, February 17, Noon – 3 PM TUITION: $75 Members, $95 Nonmembers Ruth Borgenicht Register Spring is around the corner so let’s prepare by creating flowerpots for the patio, porch, windowsill and garden! This workshop will include a discussion of drainage, design, surface decoration, and glazing. Each participant will have the opportunity to create at least two hand-built functional flowerpots. Students will select glazes and return to pick up their fired flowerpots two weeks from the workshop date. All supplies are provided. (Pots by Ruth Brogenicht) | Sixth Annual African American Film Festival | The Montclair Art Museum’s African American Cultural Committee (AACC) proudly collaborates with the Montclair African American Heritage Committee for the Sixth Annual Film Festival. The festival will include film screenings and discussions on topics relevant to the evolution of Black American cinema from the early 20th century to the present. WHEN: Thursday, February 21: Freedom Riders: Democracy in Action ADMISSION: FREE From May until December 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives by simply traveling together through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders’ belief in non-violent activism was sorely tested as mob violence and bitter racism greeted them along the way. Facing History and Ourselves is an educational partner for this PBS American Experience film, and workshop participants will learn about southern segregation laws and models of political resistance during the Civil Rights Movement. Following the workshop, please join us for a screening of film excerpts and a panel discussion featuring participants of the Freedom Rides. In partnership with Facing History and Ourselves, an international educational and professional development organization that combats racism, anti-Semitism, and prejudice, and nurtures democracy through education programs worldwide.

Based on the books Uneven Lies by Pete McDaniel and Forbidden Fairways by Doctor Calvin Sennett, the documentary celebrates the men and women who had the courage to follow their dreams – and the skill to make them come true. The documentary delves into golf history told through interviews, Samuel L. Jackson hosts the documentary of never before seen archival footage and the real life stories from history, both past and present. February's theme: Organic monoprint | The Art of Making an Artist Book | WHEN: Sunday, February 24, 10 AM – 4 PM TUITION: $90 Members, $110 Nonmembers Dorothy Cochran Register In this one-day workshop participants will employ a number of ways to make book structures, from the very simple one page sheet to a more elaborate accordion format. While learning and practicing the crafts of sequencing, cutting, pasting, folding, and decoration, students will move quickly to create wonderful structures to use as journals, gifts, or embellish with artwork. Each artist will come away with three different books and the inspiration to create more with the skills they have acquired. Materials fee of $25 payable to the instructor. Please see montclairartmuseum.org for a list of additional supplies. | Ceramic Tile Art 'In Bloom' | WHEN: Sunday, February 24, Noon – 4 PM TUITION: $90 Members, $110 Nonmembers Theresa Mustafa Register This four-hour workshop will teach students a method for transferring images onto clay slabs and carving low-relief floral designs of their choosing into a 4-inch tile. Students will also make plaster molds of each tile, which can be used later to produce multiple copies of the same tile. All supplies are provided. | |
