ANNOUNCING AN EXCITING NEW PROGRAM AT NJ REP


CLASSES IN PLAYWRITING

 

Recognized as one of the nation’s premiere theaters for the development and production of new plays, the New Jersey Repertory Company is now offering classes in playwriting for the first time since opening its doors fifteen years ago. All classes will be taught by Martyna Majok, a graduate of the playwriting program at Yale, one of the most respected writing programs in the country.

Developing Your Play

INSTRUCTOR: Martyna Majok

This is a workshop for beginning and intermediate playwrights who want to hone their basic skills and begin or develop a script. Whether you have a scene or two, a one-act or a full-length, or just an idea of what you'd like to write, the goal of the class is to move your work forward to a completed piece through presentation and discussion. Personal writing challenges and reading assignments specific to your play may also be assigned.

Playwriting Workshop

INSTRUCTOR: Martyna Majok

This more advanced workshop focuses exclusively on the playwright's writing with a goal of developing a one-act or full-length script ready for submission. Through in-class readings and discussions of your work, writers will be encouraged to stretch their stories and their ideas about theatre. Depending on the number of students and the needs of their work, entire class sessions may be dedicated to a single student's play.

 

Martyna Majok was born in Bytom, Poland, and grew up in North Jersey and Chicago. Her play, Mouse in a Jar, has been produced at Red Tape Theatre in Chicago and The LIDA Project in Denver. the friendship of her thighs,
for which she won The Jane Chambers Student Feminist Playwriting Prize, has received workshops and readings at The Tank in NYC, in Russia (in Russian) at the Playwright and Director Center of Moscow, and at The Kennedy Center.
Petty Harbour has been presented at the Carlotta Festival for New Plays at the Yale School of Drama and The Road Theatre in LA and was a finalist for this year's Princess Grace Award.

Martyna has been awarded the Merage Fellowship for the American Dream, The Olga and Paul Menn Award in Playwriting, a Ragdale residency, The Howard Stein Scholarship for Playwriting and a nomination for the Cherry Lane Mentor Project. Her short play, After Hours Stan, was produced in the Boston Theatre Marathon and published by Smith & Kraus.

Martyna received an honors BA in English Language and Literature from The University of Chicago and an MFA in Playwriting from the Yale School of Drama. She has taught playwriting at Wesleyan and The New Haven Co-Op High School, in addition to assisting a class taught by her mentor, Paula Vogel, at Yale. Martyna is working on her first musical about modern day re-settlers to the area of Chernobyl and is further developing a new play, reWilding (Yale Cabaret, 2012), in Seattle with The Satori Group.
