Subsequent concerts in the series, on February 2 and March 2, 2013, will be Major minor Masterpieces: Romantic Contrasts, with music by Chopin, Brahms and Mendelssohn, and a potpourri of Youthful Sounds—early works by Bernstein, Khachaturian and others.

Since 1992, the artist-members of the Thurnauer Chamber Music Society have presented stimulating and provocative performances representing a wide range of eras, styles, and instrumentation. Three members of the core group have been with the ensemble since its inception: Yari Bond, cello; Richard Goldsmith, clarinet; and Jon Klibonoff, piano. Violinist Sharon Roffman joined them in 2003, and violist Max Mandel in 2007. On December 15 they will be joined by guest artists Nurit Pacht, violin; Meena Bhasin, viola; Peter Weitzner, double bass; Lisa Alexander, bassoon; and Alana Vegter, French horn. In keeping with the “twenty” theme, repertoire will include the composers’ respective Opus 20 compositions, including Excursions for Piano by Samuel Barber, String Quartet in D Major by Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major. As is traditional for the TCMS, the concert will be preceded by an informal conversation about the music at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a “meet-the-artists” reception.

Dorothy Kaplan Roffman, director of the JCC Thurnauer School of Music, said, “It is amazing to me that this wonderful ensemble, often joined by their friends and colleagues, has been a part of this school for most of its existence. Best of all is that their loyal audience ranges in age from as young as five years old to certainly 85—three generations of music lovers!”

Collectively, the TCMS have appeared as soloists and as members of orchestras throughout the world and have recorded for the RCA, Columbia, Sony, Koch International, Elektra, and CRI labels. As chamber musicians they have performed with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; Musicians from Marlboro; New York Philomusica; North-South Consonance; Dorian Quartet; and the American Chamber Players, and have performed at the Aspen, Mostly Mozart, Marlboro, New England Bach, Norfolk, Caramoor, Spoleto, and San Juan Islands festivals. The Thurnauer Chamber Music Society is supported by Eva Holzer and by the Gershen and Dr. Zalman “Tiny” Konikow Chamber Music Endowment Fund.
