clip_image002Mama Doni & The Mama Doni Band will cook up a musical storm at the launch party for Mama Doni's new book, Get Cooking!  A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration (Behrman House Publishing, $19.95, available fall 2012).  Sponsored by Streit's Matzos, this free family event will celebrate a year's worth of memories and good times through music, friendship, and food.

The centerpiece of the festivities on October 14 will be a full-length, rocking  concert, featuring an array of songs from the 29-track Mama Doni CD that is included with Get Cooking!  A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration.  A book signing, cooking demo, giveaways and a host of surprises will round out the afternoon.

From Rosh Hashanah to Thanksgiving, Chanukah to Fourth of July, the Jewish American calendar is overflowing with chances to celebrate, savor good food, and get down and party with family and friends.  Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration takes readers through a year of holidays with fun, "menschy" activities for every season and recipes that give American cuisine a Jewish twist, such as "Sweet Potato Knish" for Thanksgiving and "Judah Mac 'n' Cheese Squares," "Fill-In-the-Blank Latkes," and "KFC: Kosher Fried Chicken" for Chanukah.

Mama Doni's  Get Cooking! show will highlight songs  for the upcoming holiday season and beyond, with songs for Thanksgiving, Chanukah,  and more, including a brand new, New Orleans inspired song “Get Cooking," all about living out loud, deliciously.  Kids and families should come prepared to groove to a Turkey in the Straw hoedown for Thanksgiving,  celebrate Chanukah with songs like "Latke Man" and "A Land Called Sufganiyot," look ahead to Purim and boogie to the Hamantaschen Dance, and of course join the famous Challah Day conga line!  Hip young kids and their even hipper parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles are all encouraged to get up and dance at this spirited Jewish rock concert.

Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration is filled with photos of kids from New Jersey who are Mama Doni fans.  The kids shown in the book will be on hand at Mama Doni's October 14 book launch event, performing onstage in one of the show's numbers and signing autographs and books with Mama Doni.   Food writer and cooking teacher Rachel Harkham ("Recipe Rachel"), co-author of  Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration, will also take part, joining forces with Mama Doni in demonstrating how to make an edible craft: chocolate dreidels!  There'll be free samples of Matzo Crunch Bars, made according to a Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration recipe, and Streit's will give away matzo ball mix to all, so that everyone can make Mama Doni's and Recipe Rachel's delectable Garlic & Chive Matzo Balls at home after the show.

Montclair, NJ  resident Doni Zasloff Thomas, a.k.a. Mama Doni, is the lead singer/songwriter of The Mama Doni Band, honored with a 2011 Parents’ Choice® Award for their recent release, Shabbat Shaboom, and winner of the Simcha Award for “Inspiring Joy Through Music” in competition with more than 100 bands from 15 different countries at the 2008 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam.  The band celebrates Jewish culture with irrepressible zest in its interactive family rock concerts filled with catchy pop songs that break the mold of traditional Jewish music. Quirky, offbeat, and unpredictable, The Mama Doni Band offers up a contagious and unexpected blend of reggae, rock, disco, Latin, klezmer and “Jewgrass” – all woven together with a hip Jewish sensibility.

Rachel Harkham, a.k.a. Recipe Rachel, is a food writer, cooking teacher, chocolatier, and modern Jewish mom. Through her cooking classes and demonstrations, Rachel shares her love of cooking, baking, and creating daily celebrations. The recipes in Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin' Mama Doni Celebration include her modern American reinterpretations of classic dishes, along with surefire kid-pleasers and New Jewish Cuisine with a worldly spin to please all sorts of palates.  In between writing articles, and developing recipes for several blogs, newspapers and her website, http://reciperachel.com, Rachel makes small batch chocolate and candy in fun, whimsical flavors.

Mama Doni’s recordings are available nationwide, as CDs and digital downloads, from Barnes and Noble, Amazon, FYE.com, iTunes, and select Costco locations. Watch for a new Mama Doni CD, Emunah, in fall 2012.
