SHAKESPEARE’S GREATEST TRAGIC HERO TAKES TO THE STAGE IN PISCATAWAY

My blog friend, Carol Levin (librarian at the Bridgewater Twp. Public Library), saw this production and raved about it. If you live in the Piscataway area (or don’t mind traveling), I suggest you take advantage of the opportunity to see “a brilliant young actor” (her words) in the title role. And if you have a high school student reading the play this year, please take him or her to see it. There is nothing, nothing, like seeing a live performance of Hamlet!

Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts on his uncle Claudius for murdering King Hamlet, Claudius's brother and Prince Hamlet's father, and then succeeding to the throne and taking as his wife Gertrude, the old king's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother.

The play vividly portrays both true and feigned madness—from overwhelming grief to seething rage—and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest and moral corruption.
