CENTENARY STAGE COMPANY PRESENTS “SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ” AUDITIONS FOR NJ YOUTH THEATRE PRODUCTION

SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ
Music composed by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
The New Jersey Youth Theatre production, which will be performed at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, followed by performances at the Lackland Center for the Performing Arts in Hackettstown

WHEN: Saturday, March 31; Auditions for the open dancing call will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and the open singing call will be held from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Set in the 1950s, Smokey Joe's Café centers around the "rock 'n' roll" music composed by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and deals with the themes of love's gains, losses and fantasies incorporated with humor and blended with emotion. Smokey Joe's Café revolves around the quartet of characters modeled after The Drifters.

Auditions will be held for the following roles:

  • Ken - "the smoothie", who, along with Victor, Adrian and Fred makes up a quartet modeled on The Drifters (must have ballet training)
  • Adrian - the "velvet baritone"
  • Victor - "the preening bad boy" and comic actor
  • Frederick - the implacable bass of the quartet
  • Michael - genuinely suave and impressive, evokes the memory of Elvis.
  • B.J. - inspired by the titanic rhythm and blues shouter "Big Mama Thornton "
  • Brenda - a combination of savvy, wit, brains and beauty (must have Ballet training)
  • Pattie - the throaty voice of experience
  • DeLee -suggests the innocence of teenage girls, but with a wild streak.
  • Male and Female dancers

Dedicated to the emerging performer, auditionees for this NJYT production should be between the ages of fifteen and twenty-two.

  • Performers should be prepared to sing a song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, preferably from the score. The Smokey Joe's Café score will be available at the day of the auditions.
  • Female performers must be able to belt to an E above C.
  • Performers should bring appropriate sheet music in the correct key, and a photo and resume.
  • Dancers should come prepared for dance of the 50s and 60s, with ballet skills.

Rehearsals for "Smokey Joe's Café" will run from May 19th to July 17th, six days per week from 3:00  to 11:00 PM and will be held in NJPAC's Victoria Theater.

Performances will be July 18th through July 22nd in NJPAC's Victoria Theater in Newark.

David and Carol Lackland Performing Arts Center rehearsals will run from July 24th to July 25th with performances July 26th through July 29th at the Lackland Center on the campus of Centenary College in Hackettstown.
