  • Vincenzo Bellini Overture to Norma
  • Franz Liszt Concerto for Piano #1
  • Georges Bizet Symphony in C
  • Featuring pianist Jarred Tafaro

The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey opens the 2011-12 with sparkling energy. Music of Vincenzo Bellini, Franz Liszt and Georges Bizet will fill Dolan hall with excitement as Maestro Butts leads the musicians in performance of a dynamic overture, concerto and symphony. Norma, Bellini's greatest opera, remains one of the most powerful of all operas of Italian romanticism. The overture captures the romantic spirit and lyrical beauty of the bel canto master.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt, Maestro Butts and the orchestra will be joined by pianist Jarred Tafaro for Liszt's romantically dark Piano Concerto #1. The work, considered among the most avant garde when written, represents the composer at his creative peak. In November 2010, Tafaro performed Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor with the orchestra to great acclaim. The concert will conclude with Symphony in C by Georges Bizet. Much more familiar for his operatic works such as Carmen, Bizet was a skilled orchestral composer as well, as is well heard in this sparklingly spirited symphony.
