YOUNG PERFORMERS’ WORKSHOP: SPRING FESTIVAL OF SHOWS

WHEN: May 20-29*
WHERE: The Little Theatre on the campus of Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ.

Musicals galore fill the schedule of the annual Spring Festival of Shows at the Centenary Stage Company's (CSC) Young Performers Workshop with a cast of talented young thespians from Morris, Warren, Hunterdon and Sussex counties [see list below]. The CSC YPW has been hailed as a "state treasure" by Peter Filichia of the Star Ledger.

The festival will feature the musicals Little Me, The King and I, The Clown and Peter and the Wolf and Other Dance Stories.

The YPW is led and directed by Broadway, film and television veteran, Michael Blevins.

King and IBased on the novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's classic musical, The King and I, brings to life the story of Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher who became governess to the children of the King of Siam during the early 1860s. Anna and the King contrast in philosophies and are plagued with many conflicts as well as by a love they can never express.

LITTLE ME-Cent YPWWritten by Neil Simon, with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, and choreographed by Bob Fosse, Little Me is an outrageously funny musical that tells the story of the rise to fame and fortune of Belle Poitrine, a little girl from the wrong side of the tracks who finds her way to the right side with the help of several willing gentlemen.

Written by C. Robert Jones, The Clown has a "sprightly and tuneful" score appealing to young and old alike. Mumbles, a shy clown, falls in love with the beautiful ballerina, Doria. When Dr. Tutto, the jealous circus owner discovers Mumbles secret, he frames Mumbles with the theft of the circus's money box.

Showcasing the acclaimed dance talents of the YPW performers, Peter and the Wolf & Other Dance Stories is a delightful narrated production filled with dance and music originating back to 1936 when Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by Natalya Sats and the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children. These stories are filled with lovable characters who dance their way into everyone's heart.
