How much would you pay for a white painting? Would it matter who the painter was? Would it be art? These are the questions that confront Marc, Serge and Ivan as they contemplate Serge’s latest art purchase. As these three longtime friends square off over the merits of the painting, their differences in opinion provoke a critique of a more personal nature. Friendships are tested, and the aftermath challenges the strength of those bonds, and affirms the power of art. Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc.

CAST REQUIREMENTS: 3 Men, late 20s to 50s. Actors within a similar age range will be cast. Though the play takes place in France, French accents will not be used.

  • SERGE A dermatologist who has purchased a white-on-white painting by the modernist Antrios. He does not appreciate Marc’s disapproval of his choice, and feels that Marc sneers at its abstract style, and, by extension, himself.
  • MARC A very good friend of Serge’s, but not necessarily a modern art fan. Marc is an aeronautical engineer, a practical, down to earth man. He is not married but has been seeing someone for some time now.
  • YVAN A friend of Marc and Serge. Still “finding himself” through his new job with his fiancé’s family business. Though generally edgy, his wedding is putting him further on edge, and this tension between Marc and Serge is the last straw.

Please arrive within the first hour of the audition to register. Readings will be from the script, sides will be provided. All roles are available. Casting is open, and newcomers are welcome and encouraged. If you have specific questions about the play or auditions, please contact Director Lauren M. Grof-Tisza at laurengt@gmail.com
