The Best  Christmas Pageant Ever

Characters:
  • Beth Bradley: Narrator of the story; smart and funny. Strong voice, Female, 10–16
  • Grace Bradley: Mother of Beth and Charley, the woman who volunteers to run the Christmas Pageant when the usual director breaks her leg. Must live up to her name (grace) even in the midst of the chaos, Female, 30–50
  • Bob Bradley: Father of Beth and Charley, the husband who supports his wife's efforts while trying his hardest NOT to have to get involved, Male, 30–50
  • Charley Bradley: Beth's younger brother. He always tells it like it is no matter how embarrassing that might be. Must have great comic timing, Male, 9 to 14
  • Ralph Herdman: The oldest Herdman, also the biggest. Tough and kind of cool. Plays Joseph in the Pageant, Male, 14 to 18
  • Imogene Herdman: The real brains of the Herdman clan, just a bit younger than Ralph. While playing Mary in the Pageant, we see the meaning of the Christmas story really hit her, Female, 10–16
  • Leroy Herdman: Bullies Charlie and steals his lunch. One of the Wise Men, Male, 10–17
  • Claude Herdman: Wants to be like Leroy, plays one of the Wise Men, always in competition with Olly for Leroy's attention. Male, 8–15
  • Olly Herdman: Looks up to Leroy, plays one of the Wise Men, always in competition with Claude for Leroy's attention. MAY BE CAST AS A BOY OR A GIRL. Male or Female, 8–15
  • Gladys Herdman: The youngest Herdman, should be small and full of energy. A real spitfire, Female,  8–14
  • Alice: The squeaky clean, prissy girl who usually plays Mary in the Pageant. Absolute goody two shoes, friends with Beth and Maxine, Female, 10–16
  • Maxine: Friend of Beth and Alice, Maxine narrates the Pageant itself.  Female. 10–16
  • Hobie: Good friend of Charley's. Not as outspoken as Charley, Male,  9–14
  • Elmer: Usually plays Joseph,  Male, 13–17
  • Assorted other Angels and Shepherds looking for additional 10-15 kids for these roles; all have lines and lots of stage time.  Female or Male, 6–16
  • Mrs. Armstrong: The bossy woman who usually runs the Pageant and thinks no one but herself can “properly” run the pageant. May appear onstage in wheelchair with leg in cast.
    Female, 30–60
  • Church ladies: MRS. Slocum & MRS. McCarthy: Stereotypical church ladies, the funnier the better. Female, Age: from 30–60
  • Rev. Hopkins: The minister of the church who is trying to stay out of the line of fire from everyone, Male, 30–60
