EVENTS & ACTIVITIES, WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7–12, 2010

I have put together a list of the events going on the first week in September:

AUDITIONS FOR TWO RIVER THEATER’S PRODUCTION OF CHARLOTTE'S WEB
Directed by Matt Pfeiffer (director of last season's You're a Good Man Charlie Brown)
WHERE: Two River Theater Company, 21 Bridge Avenue, Red Bank
WHEN: Tuesday, September 7, 3:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Roles available:
• FERN – female; must look age 9-12
• AVERY – male; must look age 10-15

Rehearsals: November 9 – December 5, 2010 (Mondays Off)
Daytime and Evening Performances: December 7 – January 2, 2010 (off Mondays and December 24-25 and December 31-January 1)

Roles are paid positions.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, YOU MUST CALL OR E-MAIL TO SCHEDULE AN AUDITION.

NOTE: A guardian must remain with the young person during the time of the audition to review important parent information. No drop offs, please.

At the time of scheduling an audition appointment, you will receive scenes for your child to prepare for the audition. There is no singing in the show.

VAMPYRE MACBETH
The Rogues Company's gothic re-telling of Shakespeare's classic play, Vampyre Macbeth not only adds aspects of the legend of the vampire, but is also one of the few productions to "showcase" the witches' role in Macbeth's destiny and to include Hecate, the Queen of the Witches.
WHEN: Thursday, September 9, at 7:30 PM (to accommodate a "talk-back" with the cast), Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11, at 8 PM and Sunday, September 12, at 2 PM
WHERE: Westminster Art Center (on the campus of Bloomfield College), 449 Franklin Street, at the corner of Franklin and Fremont Streets, in Bloomfield, just a short distance from the Garden State Parkway.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN THEATERWORKS SINGS!
One-Night-Only Event to Celebrate Launch of New Scholarship Program

To celebrate the launch of SMTW SINGS!, a newly-established performing arts scholarship fund, South Mountain TheaterWorks proudly presents Our Time: An Evening Of Broadway Showstoppers.

Proceeds from this one-night-only benefit concert will be used to fund cash awards at a springtime competition in which area teens will perform before a panel of celebrity judges.

Open to all New Jersey high school students, the SMTW scholarship competition is intended to help offset the high cost of pursuing a career in the arts. First prize will be a $500 cash award.

This special evening begins with a wine-and-cheese reception, followed by area favorites performing much-loved songs in an original revue.

AUDITIONS FOR THURNAUER MUSIC PROGRAMS
Students may audition for one of three large ensembles—String Camerata, Philharmonia or Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra—or a chamber music group. This year, Orchestra members will participate in a two-hour intensive workshop with Mr. Gilbert, who will then lead them in a performance that evening.
WHEN: Sunday, September 12, from 3-6 PM.
WHERE: the Thurnauer School, at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, 411 East Clinton Avenue, Tenafly.

• String Camerata, a beginning ensemble experience, is open to string players and rehearses on Mondays from 4:30–5:30 PM.
• Philharmonia, an intermediate chamber orchestra comprised of string and wind players, rehearses on Wednesdays from 5:00–6:00 PM.
• The Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra, a full orchestra which performs music from the standard orchestral repertoire, rehearses on Wednesdays from 5:00–6:30 PM.

JAZZ JAM SESSION AT THE THURNAUER
Play an instrument? Want to improvise?

• Come to the Jazz Jam Session led by the JCC Thurnauer School of Music Jazz Faculty.
• Meet other improvisers and learn about the JCC Jazz Program.
• All ages and levels welcome.

LOST BOY FOUND AT WHOLE FOODS
Premiere Stages at Kean University is collaborating with Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey to produce Tammy Ryan’s beautiful play, Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods.
WHEN: September 2–19
WHERE: Zella Fry Theatre on the Kean University campus, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J. Performances dates include Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 PM; Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3 PM, Wednesday, September 15, 10:30 AM through September 19.

AUDITONS FOR A CHRISTMAS CAROL
The Chatham Community Players will hold open auditions for Philip Wm. McKinley's original musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' most famous work, A Christmas Carol. This biennial event has been pleasing audiences in Chatham since 1988.

Director Bob Cline seeks a large cast of varying types and ages, all of whom need to sing and move well. Production dates are December 3–19, 2010.

Auditions for CHILDREN (16 years and younger) will be held:
* Saturday, September 11, at 10 AM at Stanley Congregational Church, 94 Fairmount Avenue, Chatham.

Auditions for ADULTS will be held:
* Sunday, September 12, at 6:00 PM at The Chatham Playhouse, 23 North Passaic Avenue, Chatham.
* Tuesday, September 14, at 7:00 PM at Stanley Congregational Church, 94 Fairmount Avenue, Chatham.

Musical Director Judy Stanton asks that auditioners be ready to sing a song, which shows their vocal range, and tobring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided.

Child actors without previous audition experience or material can choose a traditional holiday song or another non-rock song that they know well.

The Chatham Players have an open call casting policy. ALL roles are open, none are precast and everyone is encouraged to audition. PRINCIPAL ROLES
Charles Dickens: a tenor who narrates the show
Scrooge: the center of the production, requires a character baritone voice and an actor with both comic and dramatic range
Tiny Tim: a young boy (or girl) soprano with a winning smile
Bob Crachit: a warm baritone
Mrs. Crachit: requires a mezzo soprano with a big heart

ADDITIONAL CAST MEMBERS
The Ghost of Christmas Past: (a young girl or boy with a lilting soprano) Should be a dancer or have had dance training.
The Ghost of Christmas Present: (an imposing character tenor) Must be comfortable with music and be physically fit.
Belle: (an ingénue soprano age 18-24)
Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig: comic character actors

Various other Ensemble members portray a variety of roles including the Pawnbroker, Charwoman, Undertaker, Laundress, Cratchit Children, the Ghost of Marley, Young Scrooge, Fan, Scrooge's Nephew and Niece, and Carolers.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CHORUS AUDITIONS AT THE THURNAUER SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The JCC Thurnauer School of Music in Tenafly, New Jersey announces an opportunity for young people aged 6-15 from Bergen County and beyond to audition for the Young People’s Chorus at Thurnauer.
WHEN: Sundays, September 12 and 19, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM
WHERE: Thurnauer School, Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, 411 East Clinton Avenue, Tenafly.

No preparation or choral experience is necessary to audition. To reserve an audition time, e-mail thurnauer@jccotp.org  or call 201.408.1465. JCC membership is not a requirement for enrollment or financial aid at the Thurnauer School which is supported, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.

Rehearsals will begin on Mondays beginning October 11 at 3:45 to 4:45 PM for Prelude Choir, ages 6–9, and at 5:00 to 6:30 PM for Concert Choir, ages 10 and up.

THE LEGACY OF CURRIER & IVES: SHAPING THE AMERICAN SPIRIT
WHEN: August 21, 2010 – January 9, 2011
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 AM to 5 PM; Thursday, 11 AM to 8 PM; and Sunday, 1-5 PM.

WHERE: The Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Road (at the corner of Columbia Turnpike) in Morristown, NJ
TICKETS: Admission to the museum is $10 for adults and $7 for children, students and senior citizens. Admission is free for museum members and is free to the public every Thursday between 5 and 8 PM.

Often found on calendars, cookie tins and Christmas cards, Currier & Ives images strike a nostalgic chord in many people. A selection of the firm’s hand-colored lithographs will be on view at the Morris Museum in the special exhibition The Legacy of Currier & Ives: Shaping the American Spirit.
